  7. Identification: 15 - 45 in; Two different color 
  8. patterns exist: dark brown or olive with three 
  9. yellowish, white or orange stripes, or tan to 
  10. dark brown overlain by rows of black spots, 
  11. usually with a prominent white, yellow or orange 
  12. stripe down the middle of the back and a pale 
  13. stripe on each side; belly pale tan to pale green 
  14. with a row of black dots on each side; scales 
  15. keeled.

  17. Habits: Garter snakes are found in most habitats including backyards.  They eat tadpoles, frogs, toads and earthworms.

  19. Distribution: Most of Louisiana but known from very few localities west of the Red River and Atchafalaya Basin.

  21. Comments: Garter snakes will often flatten their bodies and pull their necks into a "S' shape when agitated. They are fairly irritable and often release musk when caught. However, they are not venomous.
